![]() ![]() The PC air combat game “War Thunder” is expected to arrive soon, and massive online shooter “PlanetSide 2” will also be making the jump from PC. The PS4 could end up being an exceptional venue for these “free” (you can make optional purchases for additional content and features) downloads. One of the most notable is “DC Universe Online” (rated Teen), a robust, action-heavy role-playing game where you play as a custom-made superhero (or villain) in the DC Comics universe. On the topic of free things, I’m delighted that the PS4 supports a handful of “free to play” games right out of the box. It’s free to download and yours to keep as long as you’re subscribed to the PlayStation Plus online service, or $14.99 otherwise. ![]() The game comes from the same developer who made the excellent “Super Stardust” and “Dead Nation” on PS3. “Resogun” looks outstanding, too, filling the screen with constant explosions and multicolored lights against elaborately designed backgrounds. The gameplay feels like a modernized take on something like “Defender” or “R-Type,” with an instantly addictive quality that compels you to chase high scores. ![]() “Resogun” (rated Everyone) is a brilliant surprise - a “free” downloadable shoot ’em up with classic arcade-style action and beautiful graphics. “Call of Duty” and “Battlefield” might be the dominant online shooters, but “Shadow Fall’s” brand of exotic, space-age warfare is a welcome alternative. The gorgeous maps are complemented by a mix of cool weapons and rock-solid gunplay. “Shadow Fall’s” multiplayer portion consists of fairly traditional infantry battles, yet it’s hard to put down. The levels are often quite roomy, too, giving you space to nose around at your leisure and maneuver in combat. The campaign levels take place in the kind of stunning and gritty futuristic environments you would expect from a well-crafted sci-fi movie. “Killzone Shadow Fall” (rated Mature) is one of just a few PS4 launch exclusives and it’s a good first-person shooter. Some initial thoughts on the latest plastic box crowding my entertainment center: ![]() On a completely unrelated note, I just got a PlayStation 4. As responsible adults, we know it’s unwise to buy new video game consoles, because they are expensive and lure us into purchasing even more games.īut responsible adults with credit cards make terrible decisions all the time. ![]()
